A Weekend With My Cousins – Part 1

Radcliffe Camera, Oxford

I remember when my parents received visitors: they were always so hospitable, generous and engaging. Hosting is an art and my parents were very good at it. Behind the scenes it was of course very hard work. When they became too busy to organise these gatherings, my parents simply passed the job to me and my sisters. So from a very young age we were encouraged to book restaurants, order dishes, send out invitations, meet their friends. The only thing they insisted on doing was to settle the bill.

My parents came from large families (they had 10 siblings each) and altogether I have over 50 first cousins, spread over four continents. Because of shared interests, I keep in touch with some cousins more than others.

Recently I met up with some of my Canadian cousins as we attended a few family dinners together. If these cousins lived in different parts of Canada it would be easier to name them (in the manner of e.g. Hong Kong Cousin, Boston Cousin, Nottingham Cousin) but they all live in Toronto. For simplicity’s sake I will call the first Canadian cousin to visit us in London ‘Toronto Cousin’.

Toronto Cousin had a very busy travel schedule but we managed to meet up a few times. We also fitted in one night in Cheltenham where we met up with Nottingham Cousin for dinner. In short: London – Oxford – Burford – Cheltenham – Broadway – Kingham – London. Mr Gochugaru, always the obliging Englishman, planned the route and took on all the driving. I researched the eating places and booked our hotel in Cheltenham. Here are a few photos from the short road trip. For previous trips taking in these same towns please see here.
