i was once on a date with someone who asked if i gambled. i said not really. i play £10 on the national lottery buying scratch cards some months, (i think at the time of the date i'd been off this habit for half a year), would like maybe once or twice a year do a normal lottery draw, or omaze (with their stupid sexy advertising!) and would enter raffles and things if i got the chance? to which they replied "OH, so you DO gamble!"
so fine, i'm a gambler. obviously this prelude is to draw you in, and make you feel safe, seen, and in good gambling company before i abruptly turn my attention to "prediction markets" aka crypto gambling.
may it never cross my mind to grumble about the ways a normal person (aka not a billionaire to millionaire) chooses to spend their money. i may think that seeing a "prediction market" as a poorly disguised gambling product packaged up to make you believe you are making a smart investment decision about a market is probably not a good way to make money, but hope, chance and potentially huge upsides in a game of chance i struggle to begrudge people of.
advertisers as entities, and the owners of these operations, on the other hand, can honestly go to hell. their security sucks, the topics of some of the bets you can make, the way they advertise and talk about these their products suck, and i am horrified to imagine how badly some people are being hung out to dry.
i had a rash of posts and thinking in my algorithms (in the self help space top be fair) around "thinking in bets" aka "seeing things as more of a gamble than they may initially feel" as a way to make better decisions. there's a book on it and everything. i think that idea is interesting and wonder if there is a world where people thought about what might happen together in a less financial gain driven way, but maybe i'm just re-inventing the opinion poll.
the scary inverse that is happening, where the veneer of economic good sense — we're investing, not gambling — is used and was justify NFTs, crypto itself in a lot of applications, and now this bullshit.
how do you feel about gambling? how do you feel about investing proper (i didn't get into it but i have complex feelings)? take a chance on me and get in contact!
this is my sixth post in my writing month challenge, which i decided is "one post for each day of november".
